CHEESEMAN'S NEW DAYLODGE14th September, 2005 Our Daylodge is now complete - read on about the project Good things come from bad! Mt Cheeseman's old Daylodge was destroyed by fire in July 2003. The old lodge began life as a Rope Tow drive shed / workshop and after the Main T bar was installed it was used soley as a generator shed & workshop. The generators were eventually shifted into a new larger workshop & Plant shed in the mid 1990's leaving the old tow shed redundant. The decision was made to convert the old Tow shed into a Daylodge facility for day guests to the field. In its final guise the lodge was a multi-purpose building which housed a Cafe, Ski Hire facilty, Public toilets and a day storage & eating area. The building was also utilised as a teaching classroom by Polytechs.
The old Daylodge As viewed from the Learners Tow The New DayLodge has been the first major expediture project that the club has undertaken in some years. Now completed it is a huge asset to Cheeseman and is the envy of many other fields! Obviously the new Lodge is far bigger and smarter than our old Daylodge and money received from insurance didn't cover the entire cost to construct the new lodge, so other sources were needed. We would like to thank the following: - The Community Trust - Christchurch City Council - Donations from within the Club's membership With help from Club members in the form of labour and sourcing materials ourselves we have been able to cut costs and come in well under the original QS estimate of close to $800,000 for a completed Lodge The new Daylodge for Mt Cheeseman has been built on top of the workshop / machinery shed facility after extensive avalanche risk analsys proved this would be one of the safer areas to locate it.
Views of workshop prior to construction The existing workshop was an ideal central location for the new Daylodge which incorporates the following facilities: - Ticket Office - Ski Hire - Public Toilets - Cafe - Classroom area - Large day guest area. The new Lodge has brilliant views of the Ski area & Mt Wall through large glass windows and is complimented by the large decking areas which are ideal for eating outdoors and soaking in the sun and views.
View looking North-East View looking west up the field The classroom area which can be divided off from the main lodge area has proved successful with some Avalanche courses run during the 2005 season. The bulk of initial shell construction (Stage 1) was undertaken by professional labour, with Club members assisting when and where possible. Stage 2 which comprised of internal fitout and construction of decking was carried out by Club members with the odd contractor being used from time to time. The Lodge was officially opened on Saturday 3rd September 2005 by Hugh Logan, Director General of the Department Of Conservation. Following the official part of the night invited guests and Club members enjoyed a traditional Cheeseman meal and party.
